Our Work

WILPF Ghana aims to challenge the unequal power dynamic that underpins society by raising awareness of violence against women and disarmament. The Section is working to change familial power relations by focusing on human rights and by investigating the root causes of violence. Over the years, the Section has increased its work on peace and other women’s issues by partnering up with local organisations and WILPF Sections in the region.

Campaigns

Disarmament

Arms control and disarmament are vital for peace and security. Be it small arms, nuclear weapons or killer robots. We believe that weapons can be a source of mistrust, instability and tensions between countries. We advocate for disarmament for peace, security and human well-being of our communities.

Stop Killer Robots Campaign

WILPF Ghana’s campaign to Stop Killer Robots works to ensure human control in the use of force. Our campaign calls for new international law on autonomy in weapons systems.

Technology should be used to empower all people, not to reduce us – to stereotypes, labels, objects, or just a or just pattern of 1’s and 0’s. With growing digital dehumanization, and the impact of Killer Robots in an increasingly automated world where machines make decisions over who to kill or what to destroy, the WILPF Ghana Stop Killer Robots campaign encourages the Ghanaian government to support the negotiation of a treaty banning autonomous weapons and the retention of meaningful human control over weapon systems. And encourages tech companies, tech workers, university students, academics, scientists, and financial institutions to pledge to not be involved in the development of killer robots.

End Gender-Based Violence

WILPF Ghana campaigns for an end to gender-based violence in schools and violence against women and girls. Gender-based violence knows no geographical, social, or economic boundaries, and needs to be addressed in Ghana and globally. Gender-based violence is not only devastating for victims but also entails significant social and economic costs. Our campaigns include: Stop Gender-Bases Violence, Stop GBV in Schools and Stop Violence Against Women and girls.

Arts for Peace

WILPF Ghana Peacebuilding work includes art that asserts the power of creativity and recognizes that sustainable peace requires more than cognitive, rational engagement. Violence feeds itself into the psyches, spirits, bodies, and souls of women, children, and men. The violence that plagues humanity today is not open to transformation through rational processes without required modes of expression that embrace paradox and give voice to thoughts and feelings that defy words. WILPF Ghana Art for peace and non-violence offer resources for promoting peace, gender justice, fighting conflicts non-violently, transforming relationships in the aftermath of violence, and building the capacities required for peace.

Witchcraft

WILPF Ghana’s campaign against witchcraft accusations is focused on advocating for changes in the law, and policy and in addressing human rights violations relating to false accusations of witchcraft, tackling and reducing accusations of witchcraft and related violence against older women, the aged, the vulnerable, and men through community-based interventions. We help older people claim their rights and challenge discrimination through the use of legislation to address accusations of witchcraft and related violence.

Girls’ Education

The WILPF Ghana Girls’ Education program uplifts and empowers young girls and their community. Educating a woman catalysis a ripple effect that enhances lives and promotes societal progress. Women educated in their youth are less likely to experience teen pregnancies, fostering a cycle of empowerment for women and their communities. Girls have the right same right to education as boys. Educated girls can make informed choices, develop skills, and knowledge and are empowered to claim their rights.

WILPF Ghana Mentorship
Program for Girls

The WILPF Ghana Mentorship Program for Girls plays a vital role in nurturing the aspirations of young girls and providing them with the guidance and support they need to succeed. Our young girls need mentors, WILPF Ghana ensures that female mentors who can model the greater diversity in women’s lives today are provided for our mentees. These good mentors offer valuable advice, share personal experiences, and serve as a source of inspiration and encouragement.
